How to Prepare an Effective Brief for Your Design Agency
The success of a design project starts with a good brief. It's the map that guides the entire project. Investing time in preparing it will save you immense time and money later.
What should an effective design brief include?
- About Your Company: Who are you, what do you do, and what's your story?
- The Project's Objective: What do you want to achieve? Be specific. "I want a brochure to attract new clients at the X trade show" is better than "I want a brochure."
- The Target Audience: Who is this communication for? Describe your ideal customer.
- The Competition: Who are your main competitors? What do you like and dislike about their design?
- Visual References (Mandatory!): Show examples of designs you like (and dislike) to communicate the style you're looking for.
- Technical Information and Requirements: Final text, sizes, formats, and mandatory elements.
- Budget and Deadlines: Be transparent about your budget and desired delivery date.
A brief is not a test. It's the beginning of a collaboration. The more information you share, the more aligned the final result will be with your vision.
