How to Prepare an Effective Brief for Your Design Agency

The success of a design project starts with a good brief. It's the map that guides the entire project. Investing time in preparing it will save you immense time and money later.

What should an effective design brief include?

  1. About Your Company: Who are you, what do you do, and what's your story?
  2. The Project's Objective: What do you want to achieve? Be specific. "I want a brochure to attract new clients at the X trade show" is better than "I want a brochure."
  3. The Target Audience: Who is this communication for? Describe your ideal customer.
  4. The Competition: Who are your main competitors? What do you like and dislike about their design?
  5. Visual References (Mandatory!): Show examples of designs you like (and dislike) to communicate the style you're looking for.
  6. Technical Information and Requirements: Final text, sizes, formats, and mandatory elements.
  7. Budget and Deadlines: Be transparent about your budget and desired delivery date.

A brief is not a test. It's the beginning of a collaboration. The more information you share, the more aligned the final result will be with your vision.
