A tipografia como personalidade: escolher tipos de letra que falam

O texto completo deste artigo está disponível apenas em inglês.

Typography is one of the most under-appreciated brand decisions a company makes. Most businesses choose a typeface based on what looks nice on a screen in a presentation. Very few ask the deeper question: what does this typeface say about us? Every typeface carries a personality, a history, and a set of connotations — and whether you intend it or not, those connotations transfer to your brand.

Serifs, sans-serifs, and what they signal

Serif typefaces — those with small strokes at the ends of letterforms — tend to communicate tradition, authority, and refinement. Sans-serifs communicate modernity, clarity, and directness. Neither is better than the other; the question is which better serves your positioning. A luxury brand using a geometric sans-serif is making a deliberate statement about contemporary elegance. A heritage brand using a modern grotesque is saying it has evolved.

The pairing problem

Most brands use at least two typefaces — one for headlines, one for body text. The most common mistake is choosing two typefaces that are too similar (creating visual monotony) or too different (creating visual conflict). A good pairing creates productive contrast: one typeface expressive and distinctive, the other quiet and highly legible.

System before aesthetics

Before falling in love with a typeface, verify that it works as a system. Does it have sufficient weights — light, regular, medium, bold — to handle all your communication needs? Does it render well on screen at small sizes? Does it include the character sets you need for your markets? A beautiful typeface that fails in context is useless.

Type is not decoration. It is the voice of your brand rendered visually. Choose it with the same rigour you would apply to any other significant brand decision.
